principal John Lombardi

September, 2009

It is a pleasure to welcome new and returning students to Monroe High School for another challenging and rewarding school year. The staff is enthusiastic about the new school year and with the great parental support that exists at Monroe High School; this promises to be an exciting year. In preparation for the upcoming school year, we have hired eight new staff members at Monroe High School. I am very excited about the knowledge and skills that each of them brings to our learning community.  Please read the “Meet the New Staff” section of the newsletter each month to learn a little bit more about each of these educators.

This year Monroe High School will welcome over 1700 students back to school. The staff has been busy preparing this summer in our continued efforts to raise the academic achievement of all of our students. We will implement our School Improvement Plan that has been prepared over the summer by our Learning Improvement Team.  The Learning Improvement Team is made up of staff, students, parents and community members that are focused on continuous academic improvement.  Our School Improvement Plan will focus on literacy and mathematics with an emphasis around improving the quality of work presented by our Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). We will continue to provide specific instructional strategies that will assist all of our students in increasing abilities in reading, writing, mathematics, and higher level thinking skills. Our mission is to empower students to be knowledgeable, responsible citizens prepared to meet life's challenges.

I encourage all parents and community members to attend our Open House Night, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Parent Visitation Days, and other school activities such as athletic contests, musical events, and theater productions. I hope that you will plan on attending our Open House scheduled for September 17th, starting at 6:15 pm with Senior Information and 7:00 pm for all families.

In addition to our strong programs, Monroe High School has a viable and active PTO organization, Bearcat Pride that offers many opportunities for parent involvement. Bearcat Pride is focused on enhancing all aspects of student life at MHS. They actively support the arts, athletics and academics in addition to support the activities of each individual class with projects such as Grad Night.  More information about Bearcat Pride can be found using the “Parents” tab above. I hope that you will take advantage of the many offerings at Monroe High School and help us make this another successful year!

November 20th, 2009

MHS ASB
Next week is Thanksgiving (oh boy)!  In the halls, you will see thanks.  Please write in the cards what you are thankful for.  Also, the annual turkey necklace game returns.  Turkeys will be passed out before school Tuesday.  The rules are:  Students with a turkey necklace cannot talk to another student from another class, or they will get their necklace taken away from the student without the necklace.  The class with the most turkey necklaces wins.   This will be a competition between freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  Results will be announced Wednesday.

ART COLLEGE
Are you a junior or senior interested in majoring in art at college?  Application deadlines are quickly approaching, so if you want to know more about how to apply, how to create an art portfolio, or which schools offer what you want, please attend an informational session with Mrs. Palmiter in the 2D art room at 7 pm on Tuesday, November 24th – that’s next Tuesday!

Important Notice About Internet Safety

The best way to protect children from online harm is to keep computers in a family area of the home. Visibility allows parents to look over the students' shoulders without being too oppressive. Young children should have a parental chaperone whenever they are on the Internet. Two sites that discuss these issues and offer advice can be found at www.safekids.com and www.safeteens.com.

Hyperlinks to staff web sites (located on the Staff page) are provided for student and parent convenience, and all staff web sites are hosted by external Internet service providers. Monroe Public Schools assumes no liability for content contained on external service provider sites. Filtering software from one of the providers listed below is recommended to prevent unauthorized access to sites beyond the District's control.
