Application for Honors Program

Linda Martin, principal

Welcome to Monroe Middle School
Home of the Mountaineers!

November 13 * From Your Principal

Each year our school takes the time to recognize all of the veterans that have served our country and helped keep our country free.  This year we honored more than 20 local veterans from our local area representing all branches of the Armed Services.  These men sat proudly as our students honored them.  As I talked with them after the assembly each and every one shared how our students’ obvious respect had made this Veterans Day truly meaningful to them.

Ms. Gould’s 7th grade Honors class was once again responsible for this year’s Veterans Day assembly on November 10th.  This wonderful event was planned and presented by the students.  The Masters of  Ceremonies, Jessica Cichanski, Elizabeth Taggart and Sage Basher, told the audience about the Pledge of Allegiance and our Flag.  The Monroe Middle School Band, directed by Mr. Jonathan Watts played the Star Spangled Banner and Hymn to the Fallen

Our special keynote speaker was Commander William Haden of the United States Navy.  He shared his thoughts on what it means to be a veteran from all of the branches of the United States military as well as what makes Veterans Day different from Memorial Day.  For example, our veterans live among us and  continue to contribute to our freedoms.

Finally, six of our 6th and 7th grade students were honored for the essays they wrote for the VFW Writing Contest on the topic of recognizing veterans.  (First Place Essays are printed in our newsletter.  Please take  a look.)  Congratulations on job well done!

6th grade:  1st Jared Cogar; 2nd Rachel Latimore; 3rd Amili Hay

The best way to protect children from online harm is to keep computers in a family area of the home. Visibility allows parents to look over the students' shoulders without being too oppressive. Young children should have a parental chaperone whenever they are on the Internet. Two sites that discuss these issues and offer advice can be found at www.safekids.com and www.safeteens.com.
