Culminating Challenge Overview

Revision Date ~ Friday September 26, 2008

The Culminating Challenge is a Monroe School District graduation requirement.  The Culminating Challenge gives students an opportunity to connect what happens at school to life after high school and includes the student's High School and Beyond Plan.  Completion of the Culminating Challenge is required for the graduating class of 2008.

Updates to this site will be posted periodically as school staff continue their work toward higher standards for all students via Culminating Challenge activities.  As you review the contents of this website, please check the revision date at the top of each page to ensure you are reviewing the most current version of our "work in progress."

Four components are required for graduation:

The Paper

A research paper that is linked to project experiences and activities or supports another area of learning that is of interest to the student.  The research paper must demonstrate both rigor and relevance.

The Presentation

A detailed and organized presentation of the student's project, presented to a "review board," where the student reflects on what they have learned and how their learning might apply to their future.  The review board is comprised of students, parents, community and staff members.

The Project

A contextually-based project, related to a career interest, the production of a product or event, learning or improving a skill, or providing a genuine service is required.  The project provides a forum for students to refine and demonstrate a personal interest or talent using the skills they have gained in high school and in life in preparation for their future.  The project must demonstrate both rigor and relevance.

The project should:

  • be guided by an "expert" who serves as a mentor;

  •  explore a passion or talent that is relevant to the student’s future;

  • document a minimum of 20 hours of verifiable project related work;

  • extend learning by allowing for in-depth study outside of the classroom;

  • apply skills and knowledge to a career, technical, academic, or community interest; and

  • provide for networking and collaboration outside of the school day (e.g., mentors, agencies, businesses).

Discipline Specific Project Examples

The Portfolio

A portfolio that includes samples of the student's best work, career research, results of interest surveys, examples of the student’s strengths and accomplishments, and a variety of other related exhibits.

The Monroe Public Schools uses a content management tool called Career Cruising to assist students in organizing the work of the Culminating Challenge.
