Important Upcoming Dates for Elementary Families

(If your child is enrolled in the Monroe Virtual Learning Academy, please disregard this message.)

Dear Elementary Families,

As part of the recent agreement between the Monroe School District and the Monroe Education Association to return students for in-person learning, all elementary school employees must be provided with training about district and school safety protocols and procedures at least two weeks prior to the first in-person student day. This mandatory training day is set for Tuesday, February 16, for all of our elementary staff. This means there will be no live instruction, small group meetings, or in-person classes for all preschool through fifth grade students on this day. Asynchronous (independent) learning activities will be provided by teachers for students to complete remotely on their own for that day.

Additionally, the agreement provides two preparation days for teachers to ready their classrooms and instruction before in-person learning resumes. As such, these preparation days for first and second grade teachers are scheduled for Wednesday, February 24, and Thursday, February 25. These two days will also be asynchronous learning days (no live instruction or Zoom meetings) for all first and second grade students. Independent learning activities will be provided for students to complete on these days. Friday, February 26, will be a distance learning day, just as it typically is. The two preparation days will not impact the current daily schedules for preschool, kindergarten, or third through fifth grade students.

Looking ahead to our plan to return third through fifth grade students on March 15, teachers in these grade levels will also be given two days to prepare for their students' return. These days are set for Wednesday, March 10, and Thursday, March 11. The two days will be asynchronous learning days (no live instruction or Zoom meetings) for all third, fourth, and fifth grade students as their teachers prepare for the return to in-person learning. Independent learning activities will be provided for students to complete on these days. Friday, March 12, will be a distance learning day, just as it typically is. These two preparation days will not impact schedules for preschool through second grade students who will already be attending in-person.

We know this is a lot of information and may be confusing, so a summary is below:

  • Tuesday, February 16 - Independent learning day for all elementary students (no live instruction, small group meetings, or in-person classes)
  • Wednesday, February 24 - Independent learning day for grades 1-2; no live instruction (regular in-person schedule for preschool & kindergarten, regular distance learning schedule for grades 3-5)
  • Thursday, February 25 - Independent learning day for grades 1-2; no live instruction (regular in-person schedule for preschool & kindergarten, regular distance learning schedule for grades 3-5)
  • Friday, February 26 - Regular distance learning day for students in K-5
  • Monday, March 1 - First and second grade students begin in-person learning
  • Wednesday, March 10 - Independent learning day for grades 3, 4, 5; no live instruction (regular in-person schedule for preschool through second grade)
  • Thursday, March 11 - Independent learning day for grades 3, 4, 5; no live instruction (regular in-person schedule for preschool through second grade)
  • Friday, March 12 - Regular distance learning day for students in K-5
