Beginning in the fall of 2020, all Monroe High School athletic teams will be classified as 3A. High school athletic teams in Washington state are categorized by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) based on the school's average student enrollment, grades 9-11 only. A school's athletic classification is reevaluated every four years.
Monroe High School's enrollment numbers classified their athletic teams as 4A in WIAA's last four-year cycle, 2016-2020. The next four-year classification cycle begins in the fall of 2020 and Monroe High School's average enrollment numbers for grades 9-11 have dropped, now placing us in the 3A classification.
While school districts have the ability to opt-up to higher classifications if they so choose, the Monroe School District Board of Directors has made the decision that it is in the best interest of our student athletes to participate in the 3A classification for the next four-year cycle. Input from the MHS admin team, coaches, players and community members was considered, including results from the community-wide survey that was collected in November.
The WIAA will publicly announce all school classification decisions at the end of January. Once classification is finalized, WESCO League athletic directors will meet to determine league alignment.
