Monroe Board Directors Elected to WSSDA Committees

Congratulations to Monroe School Board Directors Jim Langston and Darcy Cheesman for being elected as Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA) committee representatives. Director Langston was elected to the Legislative Committee as the Director Area 1 Representative and Director Cheesman was re-elected to the WSSDA Nominating Committee.

Members of WSSDA elect new members to the board of directors and committees each year at their annual conference. Each elected person represents a specific region of the state, which WSSDA refers to as "director areas" or DA's. There are 11 WSSDA DA's and each one holds a caucus meeting at the annual conference to vote on who will represent their area.

The twenty-four elected members of the Legislative Committee plus the WSSDA Vice President are responsible for reviewing and recommending positions on legislative issues. Members also serve as ex-officio members of the Federal Relations Network. Langston will serve a two-year term as the DA 1 representative on this committee, a position formerly held by Monroe School Board Director Nancy Truitt Pierce.

Director Cheesman will be serving her second two-year term on the nominating committee along with 11 other elected director area representatives and the WSSDA Immediate Past President, who serves as chair. This committee is responsible for nominating candidates for officer positions and conducting elections at the WSSDA annual conference. Cheesman says she is honored to have the opportunity to serve another term on this committee and play an important role in nominating statewide WSSDA leaders.

"Having two of our directors serve on WSSDA committees is a huge asset for our community as it helps ensure Monroe has a strong voice as leaders in education at the state level," said Superintendent Dr. Fredrika Smith.
