The Monroe School District is proud to announce the official launch of Girls Flag Football as a new varsity sport at Monroe High School, beginning in the winter season of the 2025–26 school year.
This exciting addition follows the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA)’s recent decision to sanction Girls Flag Football, its first new girls' varsity sport since 1999, representing a historic step forward in expanding athletic opportunities for female student-athletes across the state.
"We're excited to add Girls Flag Football to Monroe High School," said Superintendent Shawn Woodward. "This addition reflects our commitment to providing diverse extracurricular opportunities that align with student interests and promote their engagement at school. It also supports one of our core values, fostering an inclusive environment where all students feel welcome, connected, valued, and respected. We want every student to know they belong here, both in the classroom and beyond."
This new athletic offering is made possible thanks to our community-supported School Program & Operations Levy, which funds 100% of our athletic programs across the district. Community investment continues to play a vital role in expanding meaningful, inclusive opportunities for all students in the Monroe School District.
Program Details
Girls Flag Football will be available to students in grades 9–12 in the Monroe School District. The varsity season will feature up to 16 contests, including eligibility for post-season play and advancement through a state tournament, consistent with other WIAA-sanctioned varsity sports.
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) released the official rulebook for high school flag football last week, offering comprehensive guidance on gameplay, rules, and regulations. As a non-contact sport, flag football emphasizes safety, agility, and strategy, and eliminates the need for tackling or heavy equipment, making it an accessible and exciting sport for many.
Flag football is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the country. In 2024 alone, nearly 500,000 girls aged 6 to 17 participated nationwide, a 63% increase since 2019.
More information for interested students will be shared in Fall 2025.
