We’re proud to share that the Monroe School District has once again received a clean audit report from the Washington State Auditor’s Office (SAO). This recognition highlights our continued commitment to managing public funds responsibly and being transparent and accountable to our community.
Each year, the SAO audits public school districts across Washington State to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used responsibly and in compliance with state and federal laws. These annual audits help confirm that school districts are following financial best practices and managing public resources effectively.
For the 2023–24 fiscal year (September 1, 2023, through August 31, 2024), Monroe School District received a clean report. Due to our district’s size and annual budget, we undergo this comprehensive financial audit every year.
The SAO reviews several key areas as part of its standard process for all school districts in the state:
- Financial Statements: Verifying the accuracy of financial records
- Compliance: Ensuring adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and policies
- Internal Controls: Reviewing how public funds are protected and operations are managed
- Federal Programs: Checking that federal grant funds are used appropriately
- Performance: Assessing program effectiveness and efficiency
“Keeping a clean audit record is an important part of building and maintaining our community’s trust,” said Superintendent Shawn Woodward. “It’s also a key indicator that we are effectively using our resources and demonstrating strong fiscal responsibility—one of the five goal areas in our Strategic Plan. I’m proud of the care and effort our team puts into managing public funds. This report reflects our commitment to staying accountable and ensuring every dollar supports student learning.”
