What to Expect When Weather Affects the School Schedule

SCHOOL DELAY and CLOSURE PROCEDURES

Now that winter weather is here, we want to share our procedures for weather-related school closures and delays.

Our Decision-Making Process
The safety of students and staff is always our top priority. We understand that closures or delays can disrupt family schedules, and school closures may require extending the school year. Decisions are made carefully, considering various factors, including district-wide road conditions.

While one area of the district may have clear roads, others might have snow, ice, or fallen trees. As a result, delays or closures typically apply to all schools district-wide unless specific conditions, such as a power outage, affect only one or two schools.

How We Decide

  • Weather forecasts are monitored, and district staff assess road and parking lot conditions throughout the entire district.
  • If it is determined that a schedule change is necessary, we will notify families and staff the night before, when possible, or by 5 a.m. the day of.

Possible Schedule Changes

  1. Schools start on time with buses on snow routes. Snow route bus stops and times can be found here.
  2. Schools start two hours late (no a.m. preschool, no out-of-district transportation).
  3. Schools are closed (all after-school activities and evening facility use are canceled).

How We Communicate
If there are no changes to school schedules or bus routes, no communication will be sent.

  • Email and text message/phone call: An email and text message will be sent to all families and staff.
    • If the phone number you have listed as your primary number in Family Access is not a cell phone, you will receive an automated phone call instead of a text message. Please make sure your contact information is up to date in Family Access to ensure you receive these notifications. Families who have ‘unsubscribed’ from district emails and/or texts will not receive these notifications.

  • District website: A message will be posted to the front page of our district website.

  • Social media: Messages will be posted to the district Facebook and Instagram pages.

  • School schedule hotline: Call 360-804-2950.

  • Local news channels: Updates are sent to local media via FlashAlert.

Additional Information

  • Families of Sno-Isle, ORCA, ROTC, or Running Start students should check directly with these programs for schedule changes.
