In past years, Monroe High School has offered "Bearcat U," an opportunity for a limited number of incoming freshman students to get acquainted with MHS and learn important study skills for a few days in August before officially starting their freshman year at MHS. Beginning this year, however, we will no longer be offering Bearcat U during the summer as the same opportunities will be built into the school day and available to ALL freshmen.
Beginning next year, all MHS freshmen will be required to take 9th Grade Academy, which is a new course designed to teach important lessons in study and organizational skills, managing mental health and having a growth mindset. These skills were previously addressed during Bearcat U, but now students will get more in-depth lessons in these topics and many more to help them successfully navigate their high school career.
In addition, September 3rd is freshman orientation day for all ninth grade students at MHS. Only ninth grade students attend school on this day, giving them the opportunity to get acquainted with their new school before all students return on September 4th. Link Crew, our group of dedicated upper classmen serving as mentors, help the freshmen learn to navigate their way around the school and lead Bearcat spirit activities and icebreakers.
We are very excited to be able to expand what was previously offered at Bearcat U and make it available during the school day so that it is more inclusive and equitable for all of our freshman students.
