Third Grade Summer Reading Program

Strong reading skills are the key to success in school and beyond. Research shows that students who read at or above grade level by the end of third grade are more likely to do well in later grades. By identifying students who need extra support early, we can help them build the skills they need to succeed. To support this goal, the Monroe School District offers an in-person Summer Reading Program for students who would benefit from more reading practice in order to meet third grade reading standards.

We use the i-Ready Diagnostic tool to help us identify which students may need additional reading support. Third grade teachers work with families of students who score below grade level on this reading assessment to determine participation in the summer reading program.

During the program, identified third graders attend class four days a week. Lessons focus on key reading skills like phonics, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and comprehension—skills that are especially important for success in fourth grade. Students will work with four outstanding teachers and be supported by two paraeducators. An onsite administrator will also be available each day in case of emergency.
