Barb Baanrud

Core value exemplified: Collaboration
If I get to choose only 1 core value for Barb it is Collaboration, as she has answered every cry for help I put on her desk to get my girls back and forth from school all these years. You'd think a seasoned MSD mom would remember to sign up for transportation every year, but we aren't here to talk about my strengths or opportunities. I find communication with Barb uncomplicated, extremely helpful, and timely. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart for ensuring the littles get to their destinations!

He deserves to be recognized for his hard work and dedication.

Whether he’s retrieving balls from the school roof or cleaning the facilities, you can always expect to see him doing so in a professional way and with a smile on his face. Jennifer Nelson

Core value exemplified: Excellence
Jenny is the model for an excellent educator. She is humble, gracious, helpful, pragmatic, and team-oriented. She accomplishes more quality work than any educator I have ever encountered. She is always willing to help others. Jenny often tackles the workload of other colleagues. Furthermore, she does copious amounts of work and is seldom recognized for her efforts. She has been instrumental in PLC work for the math and science teams. She builds systems for the two middle schools to share so we can further the collaborative teamwork at Hidden River and Park Place. Our entire district benefits from the PLC work she has championed. As a district, we would be years behind without her contributions. In addition, she helped the transition into a newer curriculum in math and science. She has been instrumental in the breaking down of standards and refining our scope and sequence.

Gayle has been the best boss I’ve ever worked under. Her student-centered approach to teaching sets her apart from any experience I’ve had. It is normal to see Gayle crisscross on the floor coloring with kids. Every day she lugs in a bag full of new fresh ideas. If Gayle sees a book that she thinks will inspire a child she grabs it, if a kid is food motivated she will find the things they will work for. She also offers space in her room for kids around the school who are needing breaks. She makes every kid feel understood and works to make them feel empowered. She’s taught me empathy when I’m struggling to understand a behavior, she’s taught me to lean into my skills and helped to shape me into a para that I am. No matter how far time takes us from each other, I will always be proud to have had the privilege of seeing my fav. person in the world change the lives of so many kids during our 4 years together. I am so proud of you Gayle!

Rachel showed a level of care and compassion that left no doubt that she was genuinely concerned for each of these students. She handled interactions from parents with grace. She handled resistance from students with a firm but caring hand. I was able to help these students more efficiently due to the collaboration with Rachel. When Mr. Randall heard Miguel’s concern, he got down on his level and reassured his little friend in a kind and gentle manner. I wish I could pick all of them! Mrs D has exceeded our expectations since having Romeo in her Class this school year. I’ve never known a teacher so caring, compassionate and committed to these children. She has certainly made Romeo and his classmates feel welcomed and that they belong. After parent teacher conferences we received a postcard personalized to our family and the smile on Romeo’s face as we read it out was priceless. Mrs D has kept us all up to date on what they are focusing on in class and giving all the children aims to become top bananas and the master the baseball words, it has really given the kids motivation to learn! Romeo also came home with all little booklets of each letter of the alphabet which they were focusing on in school which we could continue at home and also reading booklets. Romeo’s Kindergarten class also went on a field trip to the pumpkin patch this year were all the kids picked their own pumpkins to bring home. Of course Romeo picked a big one! He was unable to bring it home on the bus. And you know what Mrs D did? She went out of her way to drop the pumpkin off at our house just so that Romeo could have it over the weekend and carve it!! She has always been so welcoming and a pleasure to talk to when we see her.
Courtney McLain
Teacher, Salem Woods Elementary
Core value exemplified: Excellence
Courtney McLain masterfully orchestrated and coordinated the annual Veteran's Day Assembly on November 8th at Salem Woods Elementary. She went out of her way to engage and invite families to share stories of their veterans who served in all the military branches. She compiled a vivid slide show showcasing past and present veterans and even had flags lining the walkways leading to the school entrance to welcome guests. Multiple songs were rehearsed and choreographed by different grade levels to pay respect to veterans in the community and also to teach the students about why we celebrate Veteran's day each year with a holiday off school. Additionally, educators were asked to help create drawings and cards to give to the veterans in attendance. The digital learning teacher even created a video of third graders reading the entirety of "H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet", which Courtney acquired necessary tech to make the video and sound enjoyable by all. Finally, community involvement was evident by the more than 120 visitors who came to the assembly. Courtney took the last step to make all the veterans feel honored by taking their pictures with students from the school and also grouped by the military branches they served in. Courtney's dedication to her school, the musical arts, and veterans within our community truly exemplifies excellence within the Monroe School District.

When Lori works with a student for a day, she quickly works with them for the rest of their FWE career. Lori may say she wants to retire after this year, but we know she wants to stay with us forever.
Melissa Flansburg
Teacher, Maltby Elementary
Core value exemplified: Excellence
Melissa has completely transformed our experience with special education and the IEP process. Her kindness, creativity, and dedication have made this year the first where I feel like we truly have a team invested in my kids’ success.
One of the things that sets Melissa apart is how she personalizes her approach based on my kids’ unique interests and needs. For example, she added dinosaurs to a check-in sheet for my son because she knew it would engage him and make him feel seen. The check-in sheet itself was her idea—a thoughtful way to build rapport and encourage him to open up to her. This kind of intentional, tailored support is just one example of how Melissa consistently goes above and beyond for her students.
Melissa doesn’t just stop at creating accommodations; she’s the first teacher we’ve worked with who adds meaningful supports for my kids instead of taking them away. Her creative strategies help them feel happy, confident, and motivated. She finds genius ways to make learning fun while also fostering growth and resilience.
Her communication skills are remarkable. She explains her methods in a way that makes sense, helping me feel empowered and understood. For the first time, I haven’t needed to write long, defensive emails or cried through an IEP review. Even when I’m not as responsive as I’d like to be, she remains patient and supportive, never making me feel judged.
Melissa treats my kids—and me—with genuine respect. She makes me feel like my kids are safe, loved, and truly valued. Her professionalism, humor, and warmth make her an absolute joy to work with. I can honestly say I enjoy talking to her, and I know my kids feel the same way.
This year has been such a positive, healing experience thanks to Melissa, and I can’t imagine a more deserving recipient of the Teacher of the Month award. She is making a profound difference in our lives, and I am so grateful for her.

John Fry
Lead Grounds, Maintenance & Facilities
Core value exemplified: Excellence
A lot of people don't realize this but our district is made up of nine schools and to my knowledge fourteen pieces of property all of them with grounds maintained by three guys. It’s a bunch of work but John and his crew get it done rain or shine, frozen roads or burning hot sun they are out there making sure our building looks nice keeping the grass manageable, trimming the bushes on walkways, making sure our buildings are safe from trees, pests and, drainage issues from leaves, during the winter they are out there early in the morning plowing the snow in our parking lots and putting down ice melt as to reduce chances of accidents. John keeps his crew motivated and makes sure everything that needs to be done gets done all with a smile on his face. John probably wouldn’t want me to write this because he feels like it’s just him doing his job and he doesn’t need recognition but I’m doing it anyway because the amount of work he and his crew manage to get done is incredible and should be celebrated and recognized. Thank you for all you do for us John and the grounds crew.

Michelle Patzelt
ML Specialist, Frank Wagner Elementary
Core value exemplified: Collaboration
I'm faced with the challenge of choosing just one core value for this nomination. In reviewing each choice, I had many points I could put forth as evidence of why Michelle could be recognized. I'm going with Collaboration only because my initial instinct to nominate her was based on all of her efforts as our point person for collaborating with our classified staff at FWE. We are a team of six (3 Lap, 3 ML) and together we manage a lot of moving pieces and Michelle has gone above and beyond to create a clear line of communication with our instructional paraeducators. It's clear, timely, and inclusive but above all, it's respectful of the key role that our classified colleagues play in the success of not only our team but the foundational reason why we are together; the learning and well-being of our students!

She is a great resource on our staff for all things that engage and develop the children in our school and their families. She has played a pivotal role in helping all staff to know the value and system of Parent Square. This fall without hesitation she came right to my room to help me add the additional staff that I wanted to receive my posts. She was kind and careful to lead me in the discovery of how to complete the task, so that next time I would be able to do it myself. I appreciated that although it was very simple to do I never felt that I wasted her time. I knew to ask her because her methods and posts are often used as examples by our principal. She wants to make it easy so that we communicate with parents how to help their child grow and learn. She comes early and stays late to ensure that our new WIN schedule benefits the students not only in her class, but her second grade team. Her team is additionally involved with a data pilot as well.
