She is a model worker in the lunchroom, making sure all the students get what they need, caring so much for each individual, and staying with them to make the job is well done before she takes her own lunch. Her skill at communicating with them and calming them when they are stressed is truly remarkable. She knows each student as an individual and tailors her approach to ensure equity, accountability and fairness. She has set up a special room specifically to de-escalate behavior and to give students the time they need to refocus, with the goal of returning them to class ready to learn. She uses that information to help guide that child to success throughout the day. I can rely on her to complete tasks, follow up on something I started, and answer any questions about our classroom. I am proud of her as she works her full-time job to pursue her teaching certificate and is taking a full load of classes throughout the year. She uses powerful instruction skills when working with the TK students in our classroom. I am very fortunate to have her working in the TK classroom.

Jill is just finishing up her second year as office manager at Hidden River. She has proven herself to be a dedicated leader in our school and has shown tremendous perseverance through very intense on-the-job training while getting to know new students and working with teachers and administrators. She shows great patience with students who are in the office for disciplinary reasons and talks them through each situation with grace and wisdom. As a leader in the office, she is kind, generous, and always has positive words that keep the staff motivated. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with this remarkable woman.
Transportation Staff
Transportation is not made up of just one, we are many and to accomplish what we do on a daily basis has too many working parts to just nominate ONE. Every single day, our staff is busy doing the things needed to be done to get approximately 2,500 students to and from each location safely. The knowledge needed to coordinate appropriate transportation for each student from our office staff, manager, and office support has been like watching a fine oiled machine work. The mechanics Skills have kept all our vehicles running so drivers can stay on route and stay on time. Their attention to detail was put on display with an outstanding annual Washington State Patrol inspection. This team has had such an impact on the community and within our department. The training of our newest drivers and mentoring of our student intern is supported by every single employee in transportation. We start well before school starts and well after it ends for summer programs. The skill it takes to manage a 40 foot long bus around this town with its unique demographic is compounded by, sometimes up to 60 kids sitting behind them, challenging traffic and adverse weather conditions. The relationships we build with not only each other and also with students/families are quite different than what you see in a classroom. We have some of the most educated drivers in the state and we show it in the way we navigate our way through the year on the roads around town, on field trips and the many other districts and schools we transport students to and from. Our dedication to the community doesn’t end on the last day of school. Throughout the summer we support many educational programs and participate in community events such as the Senior Parade, National Night Out Against Crime and the Fair Days Parade.

Jaimie is truly an exemplar of the Monroe School District's commitments, and I am profoundly grateful for her enduring support and guidance.
Scott Harmon
Teacher at Frank Wagner Elementary
Nomination #1: I work most often as a substitute in the Library at many of our schools. Recently I have been lucky enough to see 2 occasions (I'm sure there are many many more!) where Mr. Harmon has brought his 1st grade class in for Library time and when it's time to check out, at least half of the kids will start looking for the same book series as each other. After talking with them, I found out it is because their teacher will read one of the books in a series and then when they come to the library, they want to read even more of the same books! It is so exciting to see kids seeking out opportunities to read, but even more exciting when you see them vary their reading choices in a way that will certainly help enrich their education and well-being in so many other ways.
Nomination #2: Mr. Harmon, though a seasoned teacher, spent this year as a 2nd year 1st grade teacher. Through dedication, to deeply understanding the importance of "cracking the code", he was able to turn ALL of his students into readers. Each student experiences the joy of becoming literate. Each student can blend (read) and segment (write) with ease. In the area of phonics growth alone, Mr. Harmon's students ALL grew an astonishing amount! When unpacking his student data, it is difficult to identify (without indicators) which students are qualified as; LAP, ML or students with an IEP, because ALL grew at an accelerated rate! Nice job Mr. Harmon! We're so fortunate to have you on the team!
Jaime Johnson
Teacher at Monroe High School
JJ is such an amazing example of working to meet all kids where they are at. I have learned so much from her and am so thankful for her guidance. She pushes students to be better and find ownership. She truly sees kids. I am thankful for her.

Ms. Lowe is always working hard to help kids get better daily. Through hands-on instruction and leadership, she always strives for excellence from her students. She supports them through the process and celebrates with them. She is an exceptional colleague and our school will have a missing piece next year when she is gone.
Suzanne Russo
Band Director at Hidden River Middle School
Suzanne Russo has demonstrated a strong commitment to her program for over 20 years. She has exhibited very high expectations from her students, which is evident in the culture of excellence she has created. She has been a leader in creating HRMS' schedules for years and is loved and looked up to by her colleagues. I have benefited from PLCing with her as a subject colleague for many years.
James Lane

Mr. Lane is such an amazing teacher. Students truly are lucky to have such a strong leader and educator. He works hard, supports, respects, and educates all his students. He inspires his students to be great and motivates them to try their best. He is a great coworker and is a lifelong learner. This community is lucky to have him here!

Allison Kuala
Teacher at Frank Wagner Elementary
Ms. Kuala is a wonderful teacher. I love coming into her room throughout the day to peaceful music and a calm classroom. I love that she checks in with her students and encourages them to do their best every day.
Ashley Tuiasosopo
MHS Athletic Director/Coach
Nomination #1: Tui has worked so hard to show these kids that if they work hard enough and have a positive attitude they can achieve and surpass their goals. In the face of adversity during the State Tournament Tui was a great leader and an example of what we should all try to be. Advocating for our kids and showing them that she believes in them and cares about them no matter the outcome of the game.
Nomination #2: Tui was just named the All-Wesco Coach of the Year, a prestigious honor voted on by all the coaches in the Wesco League. This recognition couldn't have gone to a more deserving coach than Tui! Not only do the Wesco coaches see what a phenomenal coach Tui is, but we parents and our kids see it too.
My daughter played softball for Tui this year, and in all my years of watching my kids play sports, Tui is the best coach any of my children have EVER had the opportunity to play for. She is kind but firm, holding her athletes to high expectations. She pushes them hard because she sees their potential and knows they are capable. Her athletes look up to her and hold her in the highest regard. She models excellent sportsmanship and is always a calm voice of reason, even in the most heated moments on the field. She has built a team culture where the girls treat each other like family—accepting, encouraging, and having fun together. This type of team culture doesn't happen without a coach who models it, sets expectations, and holds the team accountable.
As the MHS Athletic Director, Tui is extremely organized, dedicated, and a skilled communicator. She seamlessly balances her responsibilities, ensuring everything runs smoothly for all sports programs. Her leadership extends beyond the field, as she is a mentor and role model for both coaches and athletes alike. Her dedication to the development of her players, both on and off the field, is truly inspiring. Tui's ability to connect with her athletes, understand their individual needs, and help them grow as players and people is exceptional. Her impact on the community is immeasurable, and her commitment to excellence makes her a standout coach and leader.
Melanie Gray
Principal at Salem Woods Elementary
Mrs. Gray embodies equity and inclusivity, ensuring that all SLC students and staff have access to essential resources. She fosters a culturally responsive environment where diversity is celebrated, and every student feels welcomed and valued. As a cornerstone of our community, she has earned our deep admiration and gratitude. She consistently goes above and beyond for the students, staff, and the entire SWE community. Since joining SWE, I have learned so much from her exemplary leadership. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, she truly deserves an award to mark the end of this school year.
AJ Adamski
Assistant Principal at Salem Woods Elementary
AJ is a remarkable mentor with exceptional qualities. Her meticulous attention to detail as Vice Principal has greatly impressed me. She is dedicated to providing support to any staff member who asks for help. Her feedback and communication skills are top-notch, and she is deeply appreciated. AJ is a strong advocate for both students and staff in the SWE community. She truly deserves outstanding recognition for her successful work this school year.
Cynthia Wood
Teacher at Salem Woods Elementary
Mrs. Wood is a teacher who has been exceptionally welcoming and outstanding at SWE. She warmly acknowledges and welcomes all our SLC staff and students into her classroom. She communicates with, recognizes, and engages them whenever she sees them anywhere in the school environment. She has also supported my professional growth, as I have learned so much from occasionally being in her classroom. Here is a well-deserved recognition.
Seth Krufka
Teacher at Monroe High School
I have co-taught with Seth this year in the OnBoarding class. He plans and executes great lesson plans to ensure all of the new teachers in our class have equal access to the opportunities and knowledge in each class. He thinks of how everyone wants to learn in class. He does this with his students in Bearcats Teach, he uses all strategies in his toolbox to ensure that every student who wants to become a teacher knows through his equitable access skills and strategies. It has been a real privilege to work alongside Seth throughout this year.
Stephanie Hudson
Teacher at Monroe High School
As one of her students she has shown her funny side which has made us students relate to her and make us feel comfortable with her! Not only that but with Hispanic students who don’t speak English she makes instructions in Spanish and English!
Amy Turner-McVey
Teacher at Sky Valley Education Center
Miss Amy creates a classroom environment that is full of irresistible learning invitations for her students. Any time you walk into the classroom, each child is fully engaged in their work, and obviously having fun at the same time. Miss Amy is adored by her students, and she's given our child the gift of a gentle introduction to school, while still having high expectations and laying a great foundation for the future.
Jen Munson Reese
Nurse at Chain Lake and Frank Wagner
Nomination #1: Nurse Jen is a champion. Recently, at Chain Lake, Nurse Jen has updated our emergency kits because she noticed some products were out of date. It goes beyond the health room at the schools she works at. Nurse Jen has also updated our health room training for office staff for the entire district. When she sees an area of improvement, she corrects it and finds solutions. She is even putting together a clothing closet for Monroe School District families in need. I have only worked with her a few months, so I'm sure there is more. Thank you, Nurse Jen, for all that you do!
Nomination #2: She goes above and beyond to make our health a safe place for staff and students. She has been driving every day from FWE to CLE during lunches to cover our health room para's lunch every day.
One employee from each employee category is selected each month as the Employees of the Month. The Employees of the Month will be announced in a separate news article.
Thank you for all of the nominations this year! The Employee Honor Roll will resume in September 2024!
April 2024

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE NOMINATIONS
Mollie Mohr
Paraeducator at Park Place Middle School
Mollie is kind, awesome, and always helpful!
Cheri Erickson
Learning & Teaching Department Coordinator at District Administration Office
Nomination #1: Cheri Erickson is MORE than deserving of this honor. She's practically omniscient and definitely our resident historian for all things Learning & Teaching (and more). She is as sharp as a tack, smart as a whip, and the glue that holds everything and everyone together. Having an office space near her, I hear her juggling phone calls from principals, teachers, and parents. I hear her coordinating assessments, professional development, and crunching numbers for every budget imaginable. She's the voice of common sense and manages to advocate for teachers, students, and administration alike. Without her, we'd be lost. Without a doubt, Cheri Erickson is a valuable, necessary and pivotal part of our system!
Nomination #2: As the district assessment coordinator, Cheri is knowledgeable and responsive. She is organized and does her very best to make what can be very confusing information clear. She does a great job of providing necessary training and supports schools and teachers when testing emergencies occur. She also does a terrific job of following up after testing is complete to make sure all of the reporting is done correctly. This is a big job and she handles it with grace.
Kim Kirschenmann
District Operations Specialist at District Administration Office
Kim is the go-to-guru of behind-the-scenes functions of Monroe School District. In addition to managing administrative functions of school district operations, she has taken on large scale projects such as managing district copiers, surplus, shredding, and training new student services staff. She takes on these additional responsibilities with good humor and great energy! Moreover, she volunteers on a number of committees, such as the district office sunshine committee, and is the vice president of the MSD PSE-OP local. No one is quite sure when she sleeps. We are all eternally grateful for her brains, endless patience for a constant stream of questions from staff across the district, competence, energetic spirit, and laughter.
Maria Labao
Paraeducator at Salem Woods Elementary
Maria is about the most caring person I have ever worked with, so she is particularly well suited to her position as a 1:1 paraeducator. She shows an incredible amount of dedication and is open to supporting her student in new ways. Maria has been adaptable to many changes the year has brought and has remained professional, positive, and upbeat. She has been a source of consistency for her student and they have developed a relationship that allows the student maximum access to their education. I always love seeing Maria and she extends her warmth and kindness to staff and students alike.
Lorretta Morris
Student Support Advocate at Monroe High School
I have witnessed Lorretta work tirelessly this year making sure all students are connected with the needs they might have. I know she spends a good deal of time meeting with teaching staff and other staff in the building, and in the district, to be detailed in her research for services. Given her past work Lorretta always has an answer that works or knows who to go to or what can be provided from certain organizations. Along with her professional side she also has an extremely tender side that sees students differently than almost anyone else. Her big heart allows her to be able to draw out what a student needs emotionally and I appreciate all her work with freshman and acknowledging how difficult this transition has been for them. They are a group that lost out on the end of 5th grade and half of their middle school learning and have some higher needs than other freshman classes. Thank you so much for showing up with a smile on your face day after day! Mahalo, Lorretta!!
Alissa Leach
Paraeducator at Frank Wagner Elementary
Ms. Liz is such a great asset to our school! She is willing to jump in to any scenario and problem solve with some of our most challenging students. She is a great listener as well as a great learner. She makes it so that our students with sensory needs can go to a quiet space for lunch (which has been SO great)! She also recently started adding on small groups to all of the things she does everyday. I am so grateful to be able to work with her everyday!
Paul Kinne
Bus Driver at Transportation
I have had the pleasure of riding the bus with Paul for several rides as he transports 2 of our students with complex learning needs to a private school. Paul treats each of the students with understanding, compassion and care. Even though both students are non-verbal, Paul persists in communicating with these students with age-appropriate language and has a very high rapport with both. He is always welcoming and sets the tone for calmness even when a student is having a very rough time. Paul seeks to understand the student's unmet needs so they are comfortable on the bus and accepts and follows any plans that are recommended that are in the best interest of the students. Not only have I noticed how wonderful he is, both parents have reached out to me sharing the same sentiments. We are so grateful for Paul!
Corrie Swalwell
Library Specialist at Chain Lake Elementary
Corrie has quite the tool-box she shares at CLE. She's passionate about reading and I think every student knows it's a treat for Mrs. S. when she has a good book in her hands! She takes time to notice students' literary interests and is then very purposeful in the texts she selects for read-alouds and individuals. Talk about great knowledge of students! She organized fun reading challenges this year like Aquasox Hit a Homerun in Reading and High Trek Reading Challenge to help keep kids motivated. With our big math focus this year, I really appreciate Corrie's support in nurturing students' love of reading. Teamwork in action!
Corrie also invites students to participate in Makerspace as both a creative outlet and an opportunity to strengthen social connections. She's even had a decomposing pumpkin in a jar in the library since October, which has spurred great interest in non-fiction topics (mold, organic matter, producers, consumers, decomposers, ecosystems). Corrie is also a trusted go-to adult for students needing a safe space to reset or just take a breath. Her dedication to students and staff is endless!
Karen Ligman
Office Manager at Salem Woods Elementary
Nomination #1: Not only is Karen Ligman incredibly good at every aspect of her job as Office Manager at Salem Woods, she excels in so many other ways that benefit our students. Karen jumps at the chance to celebrate or to support a student. We have many students who are working on behavior goals and they visit the office to share their successes. Karen congratulates the students and talks with them 1:1 about how their hard work has paid off. She is equally kind to students who are struggling and is just naturally so many students' "person." For example, there is a student who comes to visit to "work" in the office, as a way to take a break and regulate his emotions. Karen invites the student into her workspace and allows him to use the adding machine (which he loves), provides some scratch paper for writing or coloring and chats with him about his day. She truly cares about each student here at Salem and will go out of her way to make sure each one feels seen and heard.
Nomination #2: Karen has a student from our SLC program that eats with her almost every day. They have amazing conversations and she has taken the time to build a strong relationship with him. She has activities out and ready for him most days so that he can eat and draw, color, or create. She takes his leftover lunch to his classroom so he can eat it later if he wants. She puts the needs of our staff and students above what she needs to get done. She has gone above and beyond to support him and so many other students, staff members, and families too!
Susan Creager
Paraeducator at Monroe High School
Sue always has a positive attitude. She is always willing to lend a hand when needed.
Becky Grannan

When help is needed, especially in SLC, Becky is one of the first to offer support. Her care, compassion, and understanding of students needs and strengths shines bright. In addition, she is also caring and kind to the staff at Salem Woods. Words cannot express how appreciative we are. You are amazing, Becky!

Kitchen Manager at Chain Lake Elementary
Debbie is always warm and inviting to our students when they come into the cafeteria for breakfast and lunch. I appreciate her advocacy and open-mindedness when it comes to ensuring students have what they need to be successful.

She is able to quickly assess and support student needs, which also means she provides valuable feedback to teachers. She is also flexible and demonstrates a deep level of caring for students both in and out of her LAP groups.
Kendra McAllister
Teacher at Park Place Middle School
Kendra started teaching at our school this year and she brought a world of experience with her. She is one of the most amazing case managers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. The students that she oversees on her caseload or that she teaches in class are extremely lucky to be a part of her world. Students know she is a safe space for them and she is able to keep them calm in some really difficult and sensitive moments. She is clear and direct in her communication and is able to have it come out with a tone that sets students at ease. I love that her classroom and time is open for anyone to use and her collaboration with students has made it easy for them to get their needs met without barriers. Along with that she is also extremely organized and detailed with her time during the day and is able to teach her peers, I value her knowledge on interacting with students and adults. Thank you for setting reasonable expectations and the stability that you bring to your classrooms, Kendra!

It is hard, if not impossible to pick one category that describes how Sarah goes above and beyond in the classroom. She provides the dedication, patience and structure that is essential for my son’s learning. She caters to individual student’s needs while maintaining continuity with the class as a whole. She carefully curated books based on the likes of our kids and never holds it against them if they can’t keep still. She was the mastermind behind our new program, Maltby Families, that after MONTHS of planning and collaborating, is being implemented in Jan 2024.

Jamie always has a positive attitude and is always willing to help she goes above and beyond her job every day.

She took her time and made all the families, the schedule, separated all of the students, printed everything and made sure everyone was included. The day we had our first Mustang Families meeting was the most fun day I have had in my career. The amount of joy and just spirit and togetherness that was felt through the building was in large part to all of Jamie's hard work on this project. Jamie took on a new project this year 'Maltby Families' which fosters a powerful sense of belonging by groups all staff and students into small family groups. Each group has a teacher leader and a couple students from each grade level, which allows for cross grade level friendships and connecting to other teachers/adults in the school that students may not know. Our first meeting was a huge success! Students and staff all had fabulous times connecting together. And it was all thanks to her leadership and planning. Way to go Jamie!
Nomination #12:
I've worked with Jamie for about six years now, and she is one of the most positive and gracious people I know. She greets every adult who comes in the front door with a smile, and she connects with the kids, too. Recently, she spent HOURS establishing a new program at our school: Mustang Families. This program allows every single person at Maltby the opportunity to connect with kids they wouldn't normally have the chance to connect with. Our first Mustang Families meeting was a school-wide success and the kids loved it. Jamie definitely deserves recognition for all the love and energy she brings to our school.
Nomination #13:
Jamie always goes out of her way to make connections with students. This year, she has taken on the challenge of introducing a new program to the school, Mustang Families. This program is meant to connect all students from around the school to another adult in the building. These families meet a few times a year and will be together as long as the student is still attending Maltby. Jamie not only organized the families, but she planned what the families will do, and has been working tirelessly to create a display for the school to illustrate the families. The hours of additional work was not unnoticed! Thank you, Jamie!
Nomination #14:

Jackie Shinstrom
1st Grade Teacher - Maltby Elementary
Jackie is a 1st grade teacher at Maltby and is one of those teachers that has the amazing ability to connect to all students; making them feel seen, heard, and immensely valued! The joy and respect that comes from her students is contagious. She fosters a sense of family in her classroom and with opportunities for students to share kindness and respect for each other - opening doors of friendship to students that haven't ever had a friend before. Not only that but she is an unstoppable force for her students and the whole Maltby community. Creating solutions before they are even thought of, bringing new ideas and ways for students to see themselves in their learning, and being a helping hand to all she meets. We are beyond lucky to have her BACK at Maltby!!

Nathan Wilford
Teacher - Salem Woods Elementary
Nathan came to Salem Woods as a long term sub for PE and boy did we strike the jackpot. Not only has Nathan been working hard as a PE teacher, where he has just the right mix of empathy, kindness, and classroom management but he is also a rockstar when it comes to fulfilling the other part of his contract at Salem Woods. During the "other" part of his contract he floats from classroom to classroom to support students in math. He happily took on this role, with a great attitude and no questions asked. What a go getter. He knows just when to jump in to help and when to sit back and let students productively ponder. We have a shining star here everyone! Thank you Nathan for being amazing. We appreciate you.

Jeff Presley
Principal - Fryelands Elementary
Are all principals like this these days cause when I grew up they where mean and grumpy. He high fives the kids every morning, makes sure they get out of the cars and into the school and is out there after school also. He is live every morning and makes the kids feel noticed.
Stephanie Hudson
Teacher - Monroe High School
She is a great teacher, she runs yearbook class and she works hard to make our class run and school better!
Shamus Neary
Teacher - Sky Valley Education Center
He gives us questions that make us think; if we don't understand he explains it, goes more in depth. He helps us not just learn what we might need to write down but he helps us actually grasp concepts and understand it on a different level than we already had. He wants us to learn, grow, and understand. If we ever need help we know the door to his classroom is always open. He is a teacher that cares about his students success.
Jonathan Judy
Principal - Hidden River Middle School
I'm writing to express my sincerest gratitude for Principal Judy at Hidden River Middle School. We sat through my son's student-led conference with Mr. Judy this afternoon and I cannot tell you what a difference this conference was compared to last year. This year at Hidden River we met with Mr. Judy and our son to discuss his progress so far at school. Mr. Judy had a Google Doc which we went over together. We truly felt Mr. Judy knew our student and genuinely wanted to see him succeed. Mr. Judy helped our son set goals for his learning, wrote out a plan to help him improve his grades, explained where he should focus (the 80% of the grading) but most of all we felt heard. He spent more time with us than was originally allotted because the spot after us was open. As a parent what an amazing gift to give us. We did not feel rushed at all.
After last year's experience at PPMS during student led conferences we felt extremely discouraged. In fact we filled out the district survey in hopes conferences would go back to meeting with each teacher in a more traditional way. It just did not feel like we learned much about our student or that anyone really knew him. What a change this year. I will be filling out the district survey in a completely different way.
If student led conferences are going to continue, Principal Judy should lead district wide professional development on what a student led conference should look like. Every parent and student should have the conference we just had. We feel extremely lucky to have made the switch to Hidden River. Conferences are just one of the highlights of our fabulous experience. Believe me when I say our student is not perfect. However, Mr. Judy makes us feel heard, solves challenges and has an open line of communication. Many times closing the communication loop even when he is just letting us know he is still working on our questions.
I 100% believe Mr. Judy deserves the Employee of the Month award. Long over due for him if you ask me.
Michael Jones
SLC Teacher - Salem Woods Elementary
Mr. Jones is constantly looking for new ways to adapt activities offered in our school to include our special needs students. This includes having their own "big buddies" in an older grade to visit them and do engaging activities as well as helping them participate in our fall pumpkin and cake contest voting and other similar school fun. Regardless of which class the students spend their day in, Mr. Jones is always finding ways to make sure they are just as much a part of our school community as any other peer.
Amy Turner-McVey
Elementary Montessori Guide - Sky Valley Education Center
We are so excited that Amy joined our Montessori community at Sky Valley. She exemplifies all three aspects of the Monroe Commitment. Her Kindergarten students (and now First Grade students as well) are always busily engaged in their learning. She offers a wide variety of Montessori lessons and activities in all areas of the curriculum. At any given time you might see students working with the Montessori materials to practice number value, multiplying, spelling phonetic words, reading about biomes around the world, learning about their senses and completing an art project. Her welcoming personality and excellent instruction have brought multiple families into our Montessori community. Not only has she been a great addition to our Montessori program, she has been a fabulous addition to all of Sky Valley!
Pexa Clark
Assistant Principal - Sky Valley Education Center
While maintaining high expectations for students and staff, Pexa makes a point to check in with staff on an individual basis to offer support and encouragement, modeling what works best in a learning environment: high expectations and high levels of support. She makes time to hear various perspectives before making decisions, values the input of others, and is willing to learn and grow through thoughtful self-reflection. She willingly offers both leadership and support when each is needed. She and Karen make an amazing team and we are so thankful to have her at SVEC.
Sandy Cheesman
Teacher - Chain Lake Elementary
Sandy consistently has thoughtful lessons that provide students with powerful instruction that is always meaningful to their journey as a student and a citizen.
Amanda Murphy
Teacher - Sky Valley Education Center
In addition to the "hands-on" opportunities she gives all of her students in each of her classes, Mandi helps ensure that all staff members, students, and families have equitable access to the technology available to us. She provides training, individualized support, and behind-the-scenes problem-solving, and she's never too busy to make suggestions or offer a helping hand. I'm so grateful for her knowledge, her patience, and her support!
Itzel Romero Sanchez
Teacher - Frank Wagner Elementary
My student was diagnosed with selective mutism last year after not communicating with her classroom teachers and other school staff during kindergarten and 1st grade. Ms. Romero was open to our ideas in order to create a safe space for my student to talk which means she made sure she herself was a safe place for my daughter to share with her. Within weeks my student was saying short, one word answers and during conferences it was shared with me that my student was actively answering her in a clear voice and not a light whisper or her usual frozen stance. This is the first step to the early intervention that will shape my students future. Ms. Romero's approach and willingness to work with my student on her level while supporting an entire classroom is more than appreciated.
