About Us

At Monroe School District, our SEL team is a group of staff and educators committed to teaching and promoting social emotional learning for our students.

This team consists of behavioral health professionals, family liaisons, prevention specialists, school-based social workers, school psychologists, the district behavior analyst, school counselors, teachers, and administrators.

Though we teach and work with a broad range of students, we share a common goal of increasing our students’ ability to learn and thrive. In teaching SEL as part of our students’ education, we believe that we are furthering our Monroe Commitment: that every student has a right to powerful instruction, equitable access, and high expectations.

At Monroe School District, Joe coordinates the Monroe Community Coalition and supports schools to ensure students are ready to learn and able to reach their full potential. Joe Neigel has served the community as a Sultan City Council member since July of 2010. He is part of the Sultan Community Coalition, serves on United Way’s CORE committee, and is an alternate on Community Transit’s Board of Directors. Neigel has been in the field of substance abuse prevention for more than a decade, helping to implement prevention coalitions across Snohomish County. Neigel is recognized across the state of Washington as an expert speaker on the topics of substance abuse prevention and trauma, particularly with regard to the study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). His community guide, “Prevention Tools: What Works, What Doesn’t,” is printed and distributed to coalitions and communities statewide by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.

District Behavior Analyst

Kyra is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and serves students at the K-12 levels in the special education (SPED) department at Monroe School District. Her role is primarily focused on providing consultation to special education teachers who have students with challenging behavior. She conducts functional behavior assessments (FBA) with school psychologists, consults with SPED teachers on behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and trains staff in behavior management.
