On Monday, October 25, the Monroe School District Board of Directors unanimously approved placing a renewal School Program & Operations (SP&O) levy on the February 8, 2022 ballot.
The current School Program & Operations levy, which voters approved in 2018, is set to expire in 2022. The renewal of the SP&O levy would not be a new tax; it would be a replacement of an expiring levy that would continue to bridge the gap between what the state funds as basic education and the cost of all the programs, services, and essential staff the Monroe School District provides for its students.
"The School Board was very intentional in their decision to run a levy that would allow us to continue providing programs and services for our students without asking our community for increased financial support," said Dr. Justin Blasko, Monroe School District Superintendent. "The programs and services we currently offer in the Monroe School District are not fully funded by the state and we rely on local levy dollars to bridge that gap. The current community funded SP&O levy makes up approximately 15 percent of our budget for educational programs, services and daily operations and we are grateful our community has provided that support for our students."
A renewal of the four-year SP&O levy would continue to fund many critical day-to-day operations, programs and services, including:
- Athletics and extracurricular activities, such as band, choir and drama
- School safety and security
- Student transportation
- Special education programs
- Student support programs
- Professional learning for staff
- Operations and building maintenance costs
- Supplies and materials
- Competitive salaries and benefits beyond what the state funds
- Additional staff, such as nurses and mental health counselors
As of October 2021, Monroe taxpayers are currently paying a tax rate of $1.73 per $1,000 of assessed property value for the expiring SP&O levy. If approved by voters, the replacement SP&O Levy estimated amount of $1.71* per $1,000 of assessed property value will generate a maximum of:
- $15,890,376 in 2023 (estimated $1.71 per $1,000 of assessed property value*)
- $16,767,086 in 2024 (estimated $1.72 per $1,000 of assessed property value*)
- $17,672,509 in 2025 (estimated $1.73 per $1,000 of assessed property value*)
- $18,607,442 in 2026 (estimated $1.73 per $1,000 of assessed property value*)
*The estimated tax rates are based upon information provided by the Snohomish County Assessor's Office at this time. The exact levy rate to be collected shall be adjusted based upon the actual assessed value of the property within the Monroe School District at the time of the levy.
