After six years of service on the Monroe School District Board of Directors, Katy Woods has retired from her position as Director of District 5. A long time community activist, Woods originally ran for the School Board in hopes of making a positive impact on the education of her own two children in the district and to model servant leadership in action.
After serving her first four-year term representing the Fryelands area, Woods was re-elected to serve another four year term beginning in 2015. However, after moving to a new home located in a different area of the school district, Woods was no longer eligible to represent District 5, according to board policy. Board policy states that Directors must reside within the District they represent. If she wanted to continue to serve on the board, she would have needed to run for election in November 2017 in the District in which her new home is located. That would have meant she needed to run against her fellow board member and friend, Jason Hutchinson.
Unwilling to run against a friend and well-respected board member, Woods decided to step down and seize the opportunity to spend more time with her family. While she is still heavily involved in the community through the Rotary Club of Monroe, the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and is currently serving on the Board for Sky Valley Food Bank, Woods says being on the School Board was very time consuming and she is looking forward to giving that time back to her own family. She also plans to stay active in our schools through involvement with the Monroe Public Schools Foundation, which Board President Darcy Cheesman says "is a really good fit."
With her family present at her final Board meeting on November 27, 2017, staff and fellow Board members recognized her many years of service and dedication to the school district. "Your connections in the business community are deep and wide and have been really beneficial to the school district in many ways. And the compassion you have for people, both the kids and the staff, is impressive," said Director Nancy Truitt Pierce.
"Thank you for all of the work you do in the community. Your service does not go unnoticed," added Director Jason Hutchinson.
Former Board member, Tom MacIntyre, who served 16 years on the Board and swore Director Woods in at her first Board meeting in 2011 also was in attendance to send her off and wish her well. "One of my happiest days on the Board was when I swore in Katy Woods because I knew she was going to have a positive impact."
"This Board has made some huge changes, including hiring a new Superintendent, and I am so thankful to have been a part of that," Director Woods said in response to the many kind words from colleagues.
On December 11, 2017, at the next Board meeting, Jerry Martin, the newly elected Director of District 5, will be sworn in to fill Director Woods' position.
