Principal's Corner

Greetings Hidden River Families!

A special thanks to all of you who were able to make it to our Curriculum Night two weeks ago. We had a great turnout and I especially enjoyed the opportunity I had to briefly share with you the things we are doing here to make Hidden River a great place for your children. I get excited in talking about the "why" behind what we do here because, for us educators, it's the "why" part of our job that really gives our profession meaning and lasting value. So …thanks again for listening, attending, and for the great feedback that many of you have already provided with regards to Curriculum Night.

Our next big community event here are our fall conferences, the week of October 23 - 27. For those of you that are new to middle school, our conferences are slightly different from what you may have experienced in elementary school. Since your children have several teachers, we do an "arena style" parent conference where you can show up and circulate to each teacher, spending 5-10 minutes discussing their progress in class, getting your questions answered, etc. Our conferences this year are on October 24th and 25th, from 12:30 - 3:00 and 5:00 - 7:30 in the afternoon/evening, in the gym here at HRM. There is no need to make an appointment for these. However, if you have extensive concerns or feel like you need more time with your student's teachers than the 5-10 minutes, we can always set up a meeting outside of the conference schedule where we can take more time to discuss those concerns … just let us know. While it's not required, I always recommend that your student also attend the parent/teacher conferences with you because, after all, it's their learning we are discussing. Research tells us that they more our students know what they have to learn and where they are at on that journey, the more likely it is that they will actually learn what's important and find success in school. Middle school is a great place for students to take on that ownership, self-advocacy, and self-awareness of how they are progressing and where they are headed, so please bring them with you if possible!

Finally, thanks to all of the parents who were able to join me for our monthly "principal chat" here at Hidden River this week. It's an open forum for us to talk about what's going on here at school and for parents to ask questions, share concerns, and let us know what we are doing well that should be hi-lighted. Our next principal chat is on Tuesday, November 14th, from 9:00 - 10:00 am … I hope you can make it! Thank you for your continued support.

GO HAWKS!
