Principal's Corner

Welcome to Monroe School District and Maltby Elementary!

Bonnie McKerney and Jonathan Judy

It is an honor to serve the Maltby community. I have the opportunity of working with incredible students, thoughtful and dedicated staff and a supportive community.

I hope your summer was filled with laughter, fun and family time! I have seen some of you around town and I love being greeted by families in our community. During my summer, I welcomed a new granddaughter, read many books, attended professional learning opportunities and spent many evenings with my family barbecuing and playing in the yard.

As I begin my fourth year at Maltby, I am excited to continue the work we have begun. Many of us took classes this summer focused on balanced literacy. We are learning to engage our learners in the reading workshop model which includes independent reading in “just right books” and written responses to reading. We invite and encourage our community to be a community of readers. A couple of books you might like to share with your children are “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” by William Joyce. This is a picture book story about books and the beauty that lies within books and within each person's story. Another recommendation is "Mrs. Bixby’s Last Day,” by John David Anderson. This chapter book tells a story about a teacher that is “one of the good ones.” From the students’ perspective this teacher teaches each student far beyond the lessons within the classroom. I have them in my office and I invite you to borrow them!

Maltby is a growing community and with growth comes additions to our staff! We welcome Mr. Jonathan Judy, our vice-principal. Mr. Judy comes to us from Lake Washington School District where he worked in elementary, middle and high school. Mr. Judy will be serving both Hidden River Middle School and Maltby Elementary. We also welcome Samantha Abbott - first grade, Robin Carlson - fourth grade, Anja Springer - resource room, and Tammy Schultz - office manager.

Enjoy your last few days of summer! Get ready for an exhilarating and exciting school year ahead!! I can be contacted by email,, or by telephone, 360.804.3500.

Every Mustang Matters; Every Moment Counts.
