Jerry Martin Sworn in as New School Board Director

After being elected as the newest School Board Director in November, Jerry Martin was officially sworn in by Monroe School District Superintendent, Dr. Fredrika Smith, at his first School Board meeting on Monday, December 11, 2017. Martin represents District 5, which covers the Fryelands area, and will serve as the Curriculum and Instructional Materials Committee (CIMC) representative on the Board.

The Director of District 5 seat opened up when former Board member Katy Woods moved to a new home located within another Director's district area. Board policy states that School Board Directors must reside within the district area they represent. Woods chose not to run for election in her new district area so that she could spend more time with her family.

As a parent of a student in the Monroe School District, Martin volunteered in the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program and through his involvement in our schools, realized he wanted to do more for the students of Monroe. When he learned of Woods' seat on the Board opening up, Martin decided to throw his hat in the ring. After running a successful election campaign against one opponent, Martin secured the votes needed to occupy his seat on the School Board.

Originally from Olympia/Tumwater area, Martin has lived in Monroe for 17 years. Martin and his wife, Lisa, have 3 children and a five-year-old grandson. While their oldest children are now adults, their youngest child is currently an 8th grade student at Park Place Middle School.

Martin earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from City University of Seattle and has been employed as a Purchasing Manager for a private direct sales company for the past 19 years.

Directors Jason Hutchinson, Jim Langston and Darcy Cheesman were also sworn in to continue occupying their seats as School Board Directors at Monday evening's meeting after running successful reelection campaigns.
