Park Place Middle School Teacher Named VFW Teacher of the Year

The Monroe School District is thrilled to announce that Park Place Middle School U.S. History and Leadership teacher, Tonia Mains, has been selected as the Teacher of the Year by Ward Roney Post 7511 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Nominated by Park Place Principal Kristie Hilson, Ms. Mains is recognized for her dedication, leadership, and impact as an educator over the past two decades. Throughout her distinguished career, she has taught U.S. History, Language Arts, Leadership, and Special Education. Beyond her classroom teaching, Ms. Mains has embraced numerous leadership roles, supporting the ASB, coaching, and contributing to initiatives within the History department, Monroe Education Association, and Guiding Coalitions.

Principal Hilson describes her as the heart of Park Place Middle School, with contributions that extend far beyond her teaching. Ms. Mains actively engages with the community through partnerships with the Monroe Historical Society and the Monroe Equity Community, always seeking to connect her students to history and current events in meaningful ways.

One shining example of her dedication was a collaborative project where students researched the stories of 18 Monroe soldiers who lost their lives in WWII. This project culminated in the creation of a Veterans Memorial Monument at Lake Tye Park, a lasting tribute to their sacrifice.

Additionally, Ms. Mains has led hundreds of students on life-changing trips to Washington, D.C., where they explore monuments, battlefields, and historical sites, deepening their understanding of U.S. history and government.

In the classroom, Ms. Mains emphasizes the importance of citizenship and community involvement, instilling a deep sense of national and local pride in her students. Her lessons often include activities that connect students with their heritage and responsibilities as members of the Monroe community.

Each year, Ms. Mains organizes the Park Place Middle School Veteran’s Day assembly, a heartfelt event that brings local veterans into the school to share their experiences and inspire students. Her efforts ensure the assembly is a respectful and moving celebration of veterans’ service, earning glowing feedback from attendees.

Ms. Mains’ recognition as VFW Teacher of the Year is a testament to her tireless dedication, inspiring teaching, and unwavering commitment to honoring history and community. Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved honor!
