Monroe Virtual Learning Academy (MVLA)
The Monroe Virtual Learning Academy (MVLA) is a K-12, web-based virtual school within the Monroe School District that is being held online for the entire 2020-21 school year. Students in this program must be enrolled in the Monroe School District and all classes are taught by certificated teachers from the Monroe School District.
The academic curriculum used in this online program is standards-based and approved by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent (OSPI). Several curriculum resources are utilized in this online school to support student learning, including content from the Florida Virtual School and Brigham Young University. We chose to use content from these online curriculum providers as they integrate with all of our current systems (Canvas, Skyward, Bright Bytes, etc.) and they offer the robust curriculum we want for our students in grades K-12. The instruction for this online school is delivered through Canvas, our online learning management system, and is a combination of live online learning with a teacher and peers and independent learning that can be completed when it fits each student’s schedule.
Because MVLA is not a physical school, all students in this program are currently organized in our student information system (Family Access/Skyward) under the umbrella of Maltby Elementary (K-5), Hidden River Middle (6-8), or Monroe High (9-12). This is simply to keep all MVLA students under one digital 'roof' within our system to make attendance, course assignments, grading, etc, trackable for each student and in no way changes the student’s default or 'home school.' For example, if a student who traditionally attends Park Place Middle exits MVLA at some point in their middle school career, they will return to being a Park Place Middle School student despite the system currently displaying "Hidden River Middle School."
Is MVLA Right for My Student?
Online learning offers a unique experience and certain flexibility that is not available in a traditional classroom. While the online environment is a great alternative for some students, it is important to ensure it will be a good fit for you, your child, and their style of learning.
MVLA works best for students that:
- Have an internet connection and working computer they can use daily
- Are able to set a realistic daily schedule to work on their online coursework
- Are motivated, self-directed, and independent workers
- Are technologically savvy and check their student email daily
- Are comfortable communicating with their teacher over email and the phone
- Are good at reading instructions and following written directions
- Have good organizational skills
Reach out for help when they need it!
MVLA works best for families that:
- Do not plan to have their student return to our traditional schools for in-person learning during the entire 2020-21 school year
- Guide and encourage their student to login daily and stay on pace
- Utilize the Parent Observer account on Canvas to monitor their student's progress
- Have a reliable computer and internet connection at home away from undue distraction
Communicate regularly with their student’s virtual teacher
