Announcing New Student Reps on the School Board
Announcing New Student Reps on the School Board

The Monroe School District Board of Directors is pleased to announce they have selected two students to serve as student representatives on the school board for the 2021-22 school year. Out of 17 interested juniors and seniors in the Monroe School District, Andrew Hoff, a senior at Sky Valley Education Center, and Nathan Burrell, a junior at Monroe High School, were selected by the board at their meeting on August 23, 2021.

In the event that either of these two students are unable to fulfill their job duties or meet expectations of the board, two alternate students have also been selected. Student alternate #1 is Nora Ballard, a senior at Sky Valley Education Center, and student alternate #2 is Grace Im, a junior at Monroe High School.

For many years, the role of student representative on the school board was filled by the current ASB President of Monroe High School (MHS), who is elected annually by popular vote by the MHS student body. In addition to the ASB President's role as the student leader of MHS ASB activities, the president was also required to attend school board meetings as the ASB representative for the district.

In evaluating this past practice while looking through the lens of equity, it became apparent that selection of the student representative on the school board needed to be a more equitable process. This included opening the opportunity up to students at Leaders in Learning and Sky Valley Education Center in addition to Monroe High School, moving to an equitable random draw of interested students to eliminate selection bias, and removing qualifying criteria, such as GPA, so that the opportunity would be open to any interested and committed student.

The board recognizes there is much diversity in our student body, not just in ethnicity and cultural backgrounds, but in life experiences, individual needs, interests, skills, ideas, and opinions and as such, felt it was important that this diversity be reflected through the student representatives on the school board.

"We are very excited about this exciting opportunity for Andrew and Nathan and for student voice to become a more integral part of board meetings through these two new student representatives," said Superintendent Dr. Blasko.

The board would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the students who submitted their interest in serving as student representatives on the school board:
